What does a supercharger or turbocharger do for you?

Superchargers and turbochargers work by compressing the air which enters your engine. In doing so, more air is delivered to the combustion chamber under pressure than typically available, increasing the amount of combustion and hence the output of the engine.

A supercharger achieves this via a belt, connected to the motor which drives the compressor. Superchargers are targeted at those who want more power, especially lower in the rev range - thanks to the direct drive belt from the engine.

A turbocharger, unlike a supercharger is powered by the exhaust of the engine. As the exhaust leaves the engine it first passes through a primary turbine which is connected via a shaft to a secondary turbine which compresses the air for the combustion chamber.
